Charging an electric vehicle in New Zealand has never been easier.
Whether we are at home or on the road, New Zealanders are gaining more and more access to excellent home charging technologies and ever-improving public charging infrastructure. Here are several ways to charge your EV.
USE YOUR REGULAR SOCKET AT HOME
As long as you have the right charging cable, you can actually use your regular socket and power supply to charge your EV. On the standard 8-10 amp outlet, this is a slow process (8-12 hours for full charge) so is best done overnight. As long as you follow EECA’s safety precautions, charging your electric vehicle through the regular indoor 3-pin NZ power socket is also perfectly safe. It is best to use the sockets in your garage so you can keep your whole charging set-up away from rain and wind!
While using normal sockets can be an ideal EV charging option for when you are staying elsewhere for the night, we recommend more specialised equipment for your usual at-home charging so you can ‘fuel up’ far more efficiently.
15 AMP HOME SOCKETS FOR FASTER AND OUTDOOR CHARGING
If you don’t have a garage and you need an outside power point installed, or you want slightly faster EV charging at home, you can use a 15 amp socket with waterproof casing. An electrician can install this for you.
DEDICATED EV HOME CHARGERS
Charge faster at higher currents with a dedicated wall-mounted EV charger. Most home chargers can deliver between 16-40 amp. A dedicated wall-mounted charging unit makes charging your EV as simple, safe and efficient as possible. Many have ‘smart’ features for greater control over charging, and can help you set your car to charge at off-peak, low cost power time periods. The New Zealand Government, alongside several innovative private companies, has made substantial commitments to establishing a robust charging network across the country, to make electric vehicle charging locations accessible to all.
